The Acropolis, as any visitor to Athens will attest, is visible from all over the city. The views from the top where the Parthenon sits, are magnificent. However, until recently, it was an almost impossible ascent for the physically challenged. The glass faced elevator sits on the on the north slope.
We’ve done the climb, sometimes moving a bit slowly on a hot Athens morning, and we consider the long climb well worth it, so we recommend walking it if you can. Our best tip: Arrive first thing in the morning when the gate opens. It is cooler and the crowds will not arrive for an hour or two. Walk up at a leisurely pace–there is much to see. Enjoy the Acropolis in relative peace. When the hoards of groups begin to arrive, it’s time to leave. We went down on the south slope where there is easy access to the beautiful Acropolis Museum.
By the way, Greece is remarkably affordable. It’s not too difficult to find an affordable hotel room with a view of the Acropolis.
