We live near Chicago and visit often. It is a great city with wonderful art and architecture. We’ll be doing a series of posts describing all the great art-related things you can do there. It will take you many visits!
The “Bean” aka Cloud Gate has become one of Chicago’s the best known visitor’s sights. It is very close to Chicago’s world famous Art Institute. You can spot it by the lions guarding the steps.
The Art Institute is a must see for the art lover. You may need to schedule multiple visits! We recommend lunch upstairs at Terzo Piano. There is also a coffee shop and many nearby restaurants of varying quality.
High points include van Gogh’s The Bedroom, the Chagall windows, Surat’s A Sunday on Grand Jette, Kerry James Marshall’s Many Mansions, Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, 1942, El Greco’s The Assumption of the Virgin, Picasso’s The Old Guitarist, Grant Wood’s American Gothic, Renoir’s Two Sisters, van Gogh’s Self-Portrait, whew! And so much more. You can see a summary of collection favorites here. They now offer a virtual tour.
